Lady Child 03:27
Lady-Child By Dawn Boudreau January 2011 I have a girl She’s all grown up now When did this happen Please tell me how Just yesterday She wore pigtails and bows Now she’s a lady I’m watching her go Chorus: Now she’s gone thru the door No time for my tears to cloud her smile Dreams in her eyes of cornflower blue She’s my lady-child And there she goes I hear her tales Of places and friends A life she’s creating So it begins She’s on her own journey My work is complete I stand here watching Tears bittersweet Now she’s gone thru the door No time for my tears to cloud her smile Dreams in her eyes of cornflower blue She’s my lady-child And there she goes Bridge: Positive choices She mostly makes I’ve got me convinced From my life she takes Deep down I know The woman she’ll be Is in spite and because of me Now she’s gone thru the door No time for my tears to cloud her smile Dreams in her eyes of cornflower blue She’s my lady-child And there she goes

Sting Out of My Muse By Dawn Boudreau May 19, 2011 – For my Carter Do you even know Since I met you My heart is not my own And since we first kissed These lips are yours alone And do you even know that You took the sting out of my muse Things that made me sing the blues Have melted clean away All I wanna sing about Are your murmurs on my mouth And sunshine in my rain You took my blues And made them all yellow.

Inhibition Free December 12, 2010 Important things were said Last night when you were out of your head Now I’m left wondering Was it just drunken blundering? Or did you mean those lines You said a thousand times? Cause now I can see what you could see when you were Inhibition free That you and I Were meant to be Was it just cause I was there Or do you really care? If not, why’d you take the time To ease my worried mind? Was I the first you called As you began to fall? Cause you made me believe what you could see when you were Inhibition free That you and I We were meant to be (Instrumental) And now I’ll wait for you To see it’s true Without the help of All that booze Cause I can’t help but see what you believed When you were inhibition free You and I baby, we were meant to be

Say sweet things to me With your lips or just with your eyes Tell me lies, I'll believe Just say sweet things to me I don't wanna face the day on my own Or spend another long night alone I just wanna feel the heat from your mouth as you softly Say sweet things to me I can't bear the looks on their face Telling me I've fallen far from their grace Let me hide in your fingers gliding on my skin Cause they say sweet things to me Whisper soft in my ear That the months will be shorter this year Till I feel your breath on my neck as you softly Say those sweet things to me I would throw all this away And stay in your arms all day Hold me close and We'll sway together You're such a sweet thing to me Say sweet things to me With your lips or just with your eyes Tell me lies, I'll believe Just say sweet things I wanna hear sweet things Just say sweet things to me

I know a young man with long hair and a bushy beard, Likes to turn up the corners of his mustache. Seems he was just a boy, but that's disappeared. Now he's a handsome young man. He'd be a great catch. Someday I know he will fall in love, though I've heard him say "Girls come and go." Right now I think his music's all he's thinking of, cause he's always looking forward to that next show. I'm proud of him you know. He was a babe in arms. I watched him grow. I'm proud of him, you see, How he's turning out in spite of what could have been. I know a young man who wears his heart on his sleeve. Never leaves any doubt how he's feeling. All his friends, they look to him to take the lead, And there's strength and compassion in his dealing. Someday I know he'll have all he needs, cause he's always chasing his heart's desire. I've seen him work hard and accomplish deeds, though I know he wastes time lighting things on fire. I'm proud of him you know. He was a babe in arms. I watched him grow. I'm proud of him, you see, How he's turning out in spite of what could have been. They are men of the woods and they're men of song. And I've done my very best to teach them right from wrong. Done everything I could to be a good mom. I just hope in my heart It's a job well done. I'm proud of them you know. They were babes in arms. I watched them grow. I'm proud of them, you see, How they're turning out in spite of what could have been.

Four-letter Boys By Dawn Boudreau October 2010 [V. 1] I didn’t say I wanted forever I just said you should buy me a drink Cause I’ve done forever twice And the start is pretty nice But to tell the truth I’ve had my fill Of four-letter boys [Chorus] So talk to me and dance with me Say things that make me smile And if you make me laugh out loud We might do this a while But you should know, Chad, Matt, Josh, Dave I’ve never known one to behave Before you know, you’ll go the way Of all four-letter boys [V. 2] At first I thought we both got the picture But then you started being a tool I just like to share your bed That doesn’t mean we should be wed The more you talk The more you prove You’re a four-letter boy [Chorus] So talk to me and dance with me Say things that make me smile And if you make me laugh out loud We might do this a while But you should know, Chad, Matt, Josh, Dave I’ve never known one to behave Before you know, you’ll go the way Of all four-letter boys [V. 3] Don’t pretend you can’t keep my men straight You know you’re hanging on every word Just cause you have that fifth letter Doesn’t make you any better You’re just a drunken Slur away From a four-letter boy [Chorus] So talk to me and dance with me Say things that make me smile And if you make me laugh out loud We might do this a while But you should know, Chad, Matt, Josh, Dave I’ve never known one to behave Before you know, you’ll go the way Of all four-letter boys [Bridge] So Kyle, Carl, Greg, Mike and Stan You should know your not a part of my Long Term Plan Don’t dwell on where we might be heading Just think of all the me your getting There isn’t gonna be a wedding Silly, silly boy [Chorus] So talk to me and dance with me Say things that make me smile And if you make me laugh out loud We might do this a while But you should know, Chad, Matt, Josh, Dave I’ve never known one to behave Before you know, you’ll go the way Of all four-letter boys

I've had days where the sun is shining brightly and everything goes rightly in a yellow kinda haze but today is not one of those days It's just an ugly panty day the kind where all the toilet paper's gone and exes will not move along and the gas is disconnected by a guy and even though he's kind enough to wait while you pay the fee online you still pay the fine so put away that satin silk and lace and slap a stupid smile on your face put back your whites and ivories because of your damn ovaries drink wine with friends who love you when you're fat cause like grandma says this too shall pass It's an ugly panty day the kind where people have no protocol and then you miss your lover's call and that ounce of vodka calls your name at noon and even if you had the nerve to tie one on before the clock strikes six you know it's not a fix so put away that satin silk and lace and slap a stupid smile on your face put back your whites and ivories because of your damn ovaries drink wine with friends who love you when you're fat cause like grandma says this too shall pass Some women have used PMS as an excuse for crime. Others think it's overused for keeping men in line. I'm not gonna take it to the lengths of that extreme. I'll just eat my chocolate and try not to be so mean. so put away that satin silk and lace and slap a stupid smile on your face put back your whites and ivories because of your damn ovaries drink wine with friends who love you when you're fat cause like grandma says this too shall pass I've had days where the sun is shining brightly and everything goes rightly in a yellow kinda haze but today was an ugly panty day

Promises 03:31
I like your smile It makes my knees weak And I find I either laugh or agree with every word that you speak Your soul has no age That I can define And your voice speaks only the truth While your kisses lie {chorus} I wish that you would like me enough to make me promises Cause I would promise you Anything you wanted me to I would give up those other boys I would even give up my wine But if you won't give me your promises I won't give you mine I know you're a boy With some crazy ideas But your great taste in wine and your French words are making me feel I am not in control And I'm being a fool This was not how I planned it You're making me break all my rules {chorus} I wish that you would like me enough to make me promises Cause I would promise you Anything you wanted me to I would give up those other boys I would even give up my wine But if you won't give me your promises I won't give you mine {bridge} I like the way you hold me in the night We might be from two different worlds, But your honesty makes this alright

I Do 03:55
What have I done to Deserve someone who Can make the planets and sun Fall into line Someone who makes me feel like staying And makes me feel like playing House for the rest of my life I don't know what it is I've done but When I figure it out I Think I'll do it again I do What have I done to Deserve someone who Can make my silly heart beat After this time Someone who fills my life with bliss Sets me on fire with every kiss And loves me more than I thought could be I don't know what it is I've done but When I figure it out I Think I'll do it again I do

Lovely You 04:49

about

Vancouver singer-songwriter Dawn Boudreau starts off 2020 with some Flings & Things, the latest signpost on her long jazz road.
Who says coming-of-age stories are just for teenagers? Boudreau has lived some life and survived the twists and corkscrews to tell the tales – in the form of these 11 new songs.
New is a relative term, of course. Many were written over the past 10 years or so and held for just the right rainy day. After completing her Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies in 2016, she justifiably wanted to take some time to decompress, process and wind up for her next pitch.
Here it is, fresh out of Monarch Studios in Vancouver, with David Sikula providing the production engineering and mixing.
“He knows jazz, although the album is not strictly jazz,” said Boudreau, who points with a grin at the tracks that got drizzled in pedal steel, as one example of the innovations in her approach.
One of those tracks, the cloudy torch song Say Sweet Things, got a major thumbs up from fellow B.C. jazz chanteuse Maureen Washington who simply uttered “beautiful” when she heard it.
Another track getting early applause is the sparsely rendered Sting Out Of My Muse which is a rich duet between Boudreau’s expressive voice and Derek Maroney’s chocolaty standup bass.
Four Letter Boys is an ode to a modern woman’s average everyday sex life.
Ugly Panty Day is perhaps the world’s first theme song for that time of the month.
I Do sounds like a song Woody Allen would use for the end credits of some as-yet unfilmed love fable set in New York.
The material has variation and movement. There are tight fists of raw truth and there are languorous licks at melting insights. It is imbued with feminist realism, with a dash of healthy apathy, and wrapped in steely-eyed liberation. A young writer would be incapable of such stories, because this album has been truly lived in over a long period of time. She lost a grandmother and became a grandmother all in the same year, which is not for the faint-hearted composer.
“When I sat down with all the material I had, to decide what was going to go onto the album, I had to leave out some songs I liked, but they will find their place sometime later,” she said. “I used to write out of the chaos, all the tumultuous and painful things in life but as you get through things and learn what the important stuff really is in life, it changes how you write and even how you sing. You become grounded. I think you become a lot more interesting and so does the music.”
All tracks on Flings & Things were composed by Boudreau. One of them, I Do, appeared on her debut 2006 album Tinge Of Tangerine, but it has been entirely reworked to match her new station in life. It’s got a smooth bossa nova feel now.

Dawn Boudreau Vancouver, British Columbia

I used to think I was a jazz musician - but I must confess: I’m a folk musician who writes with a jazzy twist, sometimes with hints of musical theatre. Having achieved a comfortable state of middle-aged happiness, I love to share stories from the journey I traveled to get here. ... more
